On a scroll label Victor 21279, legendary Blues singer Tommy Johnson plays his guitar and sings "Big Road Blues" and "Cool Drink Of Water." He is accompanied by Charlie McCoy, also on guitar.
This great 78rpm record was recorded in the Memphis Auditorium in Memphis Tennessee on February 3, 1928.
Grading: Because this Tommy Johnson Victor is such an important Blues record, I have consulted with another nearby long-time collector who owns high-end playback equipment, far more sophisticated than my own. With his input about the play-grade, I believe that I have arrived at a grading description that will answer any questions that might arise.
My usual visual grading would be E to E- with a tiny dig on the Big Road side, and V to V+ on the reverse. Some light scuffing on the labels. It is in the original Orthophonic sleeve.
For a play-grade description, Big Road plays clear and strong throughout, with very little background noise; the tiny dig can be heard if one is paying close attention, otherwise it is hard to notice.
Cool Drink of Water side sounds much better than the visual grade, maybe E to E- throughout most of the record. The guitar is clear and crisp throughout with almost no background noise or hiss. However at the beginning of most of the refrains where he sings his haunting falsetto "AAAAAy asked for water", the first few words break up when he is reaching for the high notes. Except for these distortions, almost all the remaining vocals are loud and clear with virtually no distortion at all.
