Generally exceptionally clean cover has mild ring wear, front and 2 minor blemishes on back: tan moisture stain l.r. corner and wear spot at u.l. edge. Completely intact seams and spine with no splits. Very nice overall.

Joseph Byrd's very auspicious vinyl debut ...the only album to be released under the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA name ...they soon morphed into Joe Byrd And The Field Hippies - who's only (1969) album: The American Metaphysical Circus, was named after the stand-out lead track on the album here - without Dorothy Moskowitz.

Five New York-based individuals who, in the late 60’s set out to expand the boundaries of known musical universe. They were a part of the very dedicated movement, focused around the New Left set of ideals - to transcend the positive, in music and elsewhere. The tangible result of such ambition was this super-rare psych-electronic-meditative masterpiece of the psychedelic era circa 1968.

The United States of America was one of the early mixes of progressive rock and psychedelic music whose works combine early electronic music with rock. Theirs is one example of a rock music group where the claim that they were "ahead of their time" can be given without irony. Formed in 1967 by Joseph Byrd (electronic music, electric harpsichord, organ, calliope, piano, and Durrett Electronic Music Synthesizer), Dorothy Moskowitz (lead vocals), Gordon Marron (electric violin, ring modulator), Rand Forbes (fretless electric bass) and Craig Woodson (electric drums and percussion). Ed Bogas also performed on the record with occasional organ, piano, and calliope; he became a full member of the band on its first and only tour. The record was recorded and produced by David Rubinson, for CBS Records in 1967, and released in 1968.

In the neighborhood of Fifty Foot Hose's Cauldron and White Noise's An Electric Storm but more coherent, consistently melodic and interconnected; also more well-known than those great pioneering electronic psych outfits because this LP was issued on major label, Columbia Records. Avant Psych cool throughout, very trippy, awesome electronics, perfect melding of sun-chilled flower psych and pure psych freak-outs. If there's one album that needs more exposure it is this one. Quite innovative for its time with its use of electronic instruments and use of samples and strong melodic songs ...'The Garden of Earthly Delights' and 'The American Metaphysical Circus', which opens the album utilize mysterious haunting vocals over an shifting, fuzzy or buzzing synth melodies - very immersing. The rest of the album continues with a combination of upbeat trips and atmospheric, at times classical-tinged trippy psych and folk/psych. The tight rhythm section goes down well with the anomalous, ever-shifting electronic melodies. All the songs have their own personality and the LP has many stand-outs including, besides the 2 already mentioned: 'Hard Coming Love', 'Cloud Song', 'Coming Down', Stranded in Time' and 'Love Song for the Dead Che'.

Columbia Records recently reissued this LP, for the first time in about 30 years, but this original version - on the original "360 Stereo" Columbia label is far superior in almost every way, to the reissue. The sound is sharp, fully defined and crisp, separation clear and dynamic range almost beyond human capacities.
