Iron Maiden fans will know exactly what this is. It is the first of two 45s released by Urchin, the nasty, against the grain band who were going to be IM's guitarist/songwriter Adrian Smiths main vehicle until he was persuaded to join Iron Maiden...and the rest as they say....
The single, DJS 10776, "Black Leather Fantasy" backed by "Rock & Roll Woman" is by far the rarer of the bands pair of scarce releases on the DJM label. This version was one of a tiny press of promos for the industry insiders. To find one in this condition and still with the promo-only sleeve is many a Maiden/NWOBHM fan's dream. I cannot recall coming across another promo-bagged version of this in all my years of collecting records. It is a genuine cornerstone of serious NWOBHM collecting.
The disc itself is in truly superb condition - no scratches, no ringwear, no stickers, no writing. The sleeve is unfaded unmarked and in amazing shape after nearly thirty years. There is no picture of the band, merely quite a lengthy blurb introducing this brand new group onto a 1977 UK music scene obsessed with punk. These guys really were pioneers of new metal. It reads:
"With a powerful, driving rock sound reminiscent of the progressive bands of the late sixties, Urchin could prove to be the forerunners of a new revival of heavy British rock..." Well, they said it. And of course there is in large letters the all important "PROMOTION COPY NOT FOR SALE" which earmarks this rarity from the non-custom sleeve ordinary issue.
It is unlikely a better copy will be presented onto eBay. The starting price on this milestone is hard rock history is low and there is no reserve.
