Description
Extremely rare first proof printing of VU's famous first album from 1967 with Andy Warhol banana cover. Verve V-5006 MONO cover with 'torso' photo on rear. A few of these covers, stamped with an "S" were sent from the printers to Verve for approval before getting the go ahead to print. All are mono covers. These proofs are rarer than the yellow label promotional albums! They were never intended to leave the record company but obviously some did. They did not come with records, so someone at Verve put an early stereo LP in this cover to give away. Interestingly the record comes in the early verve inner sleeve usually used with their jazz recordings. Thus it is prior to the rock inner usually seen with this album. CONDITION: The cover is in fine condition. The banana is INTACT with no tears. There is no writing on the cover. There is minimal ring wear at top and bottom of the front. There is a superficial tear about one third of the way down from the top on the outer the edge of the back cover that does not affect the photo. There are two white spots on the torso picture. No seam splits and the spine is in good condition. I would rate this cover as VG+ The record is in excellent condition with shiny surfaces with no scratches or scuffs. The labels are like new with no spindle marks. the record looks hardly played. I'd rate it as excellent (I never classify records as "mint", as this is so subjective.) All in all a magnificent example of a very rare early Velvet Underground & Nico album in great condition!
