in 1966 there was...
...a group that changed the face of popular music forever.

Compared with other popular 60s bands The Velvets may not have had quite such an immediate impact at the time, but they have made a hugely important and undeniably influential contribution to music as we know it today.

These early rehearsal tapes capture The Velvets finding their feet as a group and breaking in their new chanteuse Nico, who was installed at Andy Warhol's behest and had landed in America only a week before these recordings! 'In 1966...' features many casual 'jams' alongside their own songs - some of which were included on 'The Velvet Underground & Nico' debut album, plus a couple that lay unreleased to this day; most notably 'Miss Joanie Lee' and 'Get It On Time'. Another highlight is Lou Reed teaching Nico to sing 'There She Goes Again', which seems a touch too much for the singer's broken English! This subsequently saw release on the first LP with Reed singing. These practise sessions also drew out lengthy blues-led instrumentals including John Lee Hooker's Boom Boom', Booker T & The MG's 'Green Onions', and a teaser of the Beatles 'Day Tripper' - which seems quite a surprise in retrospect.

3 other songs presented here are captured from a recording taken very early on the group's career at the Film Makers' Cinematheque in New York. 'Heroin' is faithful to the final released version, while Nico steps up to the microphone for Bob Dylan's 'I'll Keep It With Mine' - a song given by Dylan to Nico as early as 1964 and eventually released on her debut album 'Chelsea Girls'. The final cut, 'European Son' is a sheer assault on the senses! The smattering of applause after each song sums up what a strange experience it might have been, seeing the group perform live in 1966...

Two unreleased demos cut at John Cale's Lower Manhattan home during a very cold winter in New York are also given an airing here. 'Sheltered Life' is another unissued song, whereas 'Here She Comes Now' saw release on the second VU LP 'White Light/White Heat'. The recordings display a folkier side to the VU and are recorded with just John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Lou Reed.

The last track is taken from The East Village Other - an underground paper based in New York City who released an LP in August 1966... The album, released on the ESP-Disk label consisted of poetry, chants and speech and The Velvets contribution featured a short bust of, well, 'noise' - as the backdrop to a conversation with Lyndon Johnson's daughter Lucy Byrd being interviewed on her wedding day.
