Description

WAR OF THE WORLDS 16” Transcriptions 1938 Orson Welles Radio Excellent RARE Mercury Theater

Offered here are a pair of 16” Acetate Transcription discs of Orson Welles’ famous WAR OF THE WORLDS broadcast in 1938.  I acquired them from a deceased friend who had them since the 60s, but I don’t know where they came from beyond that.  I do not know when they were cut.  They are in excellent condition, glossy as shown and presumed to be dubs since Sides 1&2 are on one disc and Sides 3&4 are on the second disc.  An audio friend played parts of them long ago to investigate the quality and said they were excellent.  That said, they are sold as-is and I make no guarantee as to the quality of the discs.

"The War of the Worlds" is an episode of the American radio drama anthology series The Mercury Theatre on the Air. It was performed as a Halloween episode of the series on Sunday, October 30, 1938, and aired over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. Directed and narrated by actor and future filmmaker Orson Welles, the episode was an adaptation of H. G. Wells' novel The War of the Worlds (1898). It became famous for allegedly causing mass panic, although the scale of the panic is disputed as the program had relatively few listeners.
