OLLIET 18107
BARBARA YOUNGBLOOD AND HER "MUSICAL SOCKOS"
"MY CIVIL RIGHTS" / "CHESTNUT BOOGIE"
FOR HOME USE ONLY NOT LICENSED FOR RADIO BROADCAST
This was recorded in 1948. the tune "My Civil Rights" is a smooth and sultry type of blues. sort of reminds me of some of T-Bone Walker's tunes.. The song references the three political party conventions that were held in Philadelphia that year, the Republican , Democrat, and Progressive Party (which was made up of mostly dissatisfied Democrats). Both Republican and Democratic parties adopted civil rights planks which caused protests from the more overt racist , segregationist wings. Most famously with Strom Thurmond and other Southern delegates breaking off to form the States' Rights Democratic Party a.k.a. the "Dixiecrats". The liberal Progressive party also had adopted a civil rights plank...The song points this out but as the singer says " Makes me no difference, just so I GET MY RIGHTS"
A great tune delivered solidly by this combo. I couldn't find out much about the group BARBARA YOUNGBLOOD AND HER "MUSICAL SOCKOS" but presumably they are from Oakland, CA. where the label Olliet was based out of.
The flip is a nice boogie by the Sockos without Barbara.
E to E+ , fully glossy, clean labels, rarely played, a few faint marks visible under light and a slight storage warp that do not affect play.. a very spiffy looking disc that plays great.
