Description

Akai GX-4000D, Glass and Ferrite Head, GX Focussed Field.

Flagship Akai tape deck in a nice professional looking studio black rather than the more usual living-room silver. Everything works as it should with crisp, clear playback, undetectable wow and flutter at 3 ¾ and 7 ½ ips and silent first stage FETs. The glass heads are reputed to last forever and just in case you want to go beyond that time-frame I am including brand new spare record and playback heads! Other new spares included in the sale are:

FET 2SK30 (1),

Headphone output IC LA 4170,

Capstan wheel and Resin Roller,

Drive belt D110

Service manual, parts list (photocopy) and an original circuit diagram.

The metal Akai reel is included together with a mains cord set.

In good cosmetic condition for it’s age there are some minor paint scrapes on the under side and the head cover has one of the fixing “sockets” damaged however this does not show and moreover the cover still fixes into place quite securely. I have tried to show these in the photographs.

The GX-4000D is beautifully engineered to last. It’s technical specification is as good as it comes:

4 track 2 channel stereo/mono system

Wow and flutter less than 0.08WRMS

Frequency Response 30 to 24000 at 7 ½ ips; 30 to 16000 at 3 ¾ ips

S/N ratio better than 60 dB

Erase Ratio better than 70 dB

Sound on Sound recording

Separate playback head allowing monitoring during recording.

This is a heavy unit and so I would prefer the winning bidder to collect it from the Wokingham area where it can be seen (and heard) working perfectly. I am willing to ship it to a UK address if necessary however this will be strictly at the buyer’s risk and cost (possibly in the region of £25).
