This is an extremely rare item with a very unique history:

I purchased this item from Jeff Gold, former Executive Vice President/General Manager of Warner Bros. Records and Vice President of Marketing and Creative Services at A&M Records, who has been collecting records for nearly 40 years.  Jeff is a highly knowledgeable individual regarding the music industry and was profiled by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the top collectors of high-end music memorabilia in the world.

According to Jeff's account from Joel Bernstein (musician, rock & roll photographer and good friend of Neil Young), Neil and Joel were at Neil's ranch going though Neil's vast amount of vinyl.  Apparently, Joel was helping Neil was sort items into what he wanted to save and what he wished to discard.  Jeff's understanding was that Neil tossed this acetate in the discard pile, from which it was then salvaged by Joel.  Jeff Gold bought it from Joel, I bought it from Jeff, and such is the history of this highly unique collectible.

Another interesting note is that, though this is Neil's song, either his band mates or some aspect of management didn't think Neil's voice was (at that time) good enough to sing the lead on this song so the Springfield's Richey Furay sang the lead when they recorded it.  It wasn't until 1971's 4 Way Street, a double LP of various live tracks from CSNY concerts, that On The Way Home was released on vinyl to the public with Neil singing the lead on this song.

ABOUT VINYL ACETATES: In the early days, vinyl acetates were the very first versions of a recording that made it to vinyl and these acetates precluded vinyl test pressings (these days CD acetates have the same function).  Vinyl acetates are not made for repeated playback and usually only a few are made.  They are more often than not quite thick vinyl (more bittle than flexible) and only meant for initial approval by the artist and a few other industry related individuals in order to move forward to the next stage of vinyl test pressings.  These acetates should not be played on vintage wind-up victrolas or gramophones with heavy tone arms or steel needles; they simply were not produced for any kind of heavy use.

FROM JEFF GOLD:  An acetate is a disc made with a metal core covered in a purple acetate/shellac type material. They are cut, one at a time, in real time so that an artist can listen to a work in progress, or approve a record before it is pressed.  They cost about $500 each to make, as they require a mastering engineer and a cutting lathe, two very expensive things.  The engineer plays back the master tape into a lathe, basically a reverse turntable, which uses a hot needle to cut the grooves into the acetate disc. The conventional wisdom is that they're good for about 30-40 plays before the sound begins to denigrate.  But they're highly collectible as they are made in very small numbers, perhaps 2-5 tops, and represent a part of the recording process.

This record is so unique it is difficult to grade. There is no mention of label, artist, recording company or any other notations save for title and speed. It is just one track on just one side; there is nothing laid down on side two.  There is an extra hole as you can see in photo 3; it is off center, smaller than the center hole and I believe this is to identify it as a first draft acetate and not a test pressing. There are some scrapes on the edge of the disc per photo 4 (perhaps from when Neil tossed it?) that do not affect play since the song track does not begin until more than 50% deep into side one (the songtrack is visble as the grainy section in photo 1).

Buffalo Springfield - 10" Acetate From Neil Young's Collection

A 10" one-sided mono acetate of Buffalo Springfield's "ON THE WAY HOME"--the leadoff cut from their last album, Last Time Around. This EX++ beauty has barely been played, and I obtained it from a close associate of Neil Young's (he wrote this song) who got it from Neil, who had discarded it. Super rare and absolutely genuine.
