MONK'S BLUES PC 9806 COLUMBIA/SONY STEREO ISSUE - Monk made idiosyncrasy a way of life and a way of music--all without artifice or cliché. He was unrepeatable and unforgettable. No one else sounds much like him, although I have a George Russell recording where Russell (more known as an arranger than a soloist) betrays some influence.
Monk is most known for his quartets, but this is a big band setting with multi-layered and swinging arrangements by Oliver Nelson. Yet Monk is still Monk: the use of space, always playing the melody, the long, inimitable arpeggios, the percussive sensibility, the serious playfulness and earnestness without being precious or pretentious.
Yes, Monk tended to play the same tunes repeatedly at this point in his career, but these renditions shine, nevertheless. Listen. Enjoy. Be thankful. Human are bestowed with the ability to manifest beauty.

MONK COLUMBIA/SONY RECORDS CS-9091 STEREO ISSUE - The familiar "formula" that Monk utilized throughout most of his '60s tenure at Columbia was firmly in place on this, his fourth album for the label. But that recipe--originals sprinkled with covers, played by a quartet of familiar sidemen (veteran tenor sax accomplice Charlie Rouse, newer compatriots Ben Riley on drums, and bassist Larry Gales)--proves deceptively facile on the expanded reissue of this 1965 album. While Gershwin's elegant "Liza" and the standard "April in Paris" are perfect fodder for the pianist's harmonic and rhythmic tweaking, his playful take on the children's song "That Old Man" ably demonstrates how the musician could recast even the most foursquare composition in his own likeness. Even more revealing is Monk's solo exploration of the hoary "I Love You (Sweetheart of My Dreams)," a performance where his left hand seems to mine the stride foundations of his beloved J.P. Johnson, while his right flits restlessly in a different half-century. Rouse takes rewarding turns in the spotlight on "Just You, Just Me" and "Pannonica" (the latter normally a Monk solo excursion),
THELONIOUS MONK – CRISS CROSS – Limited Edition – OUT OF PRINT PRESSING COLUMBIA SONY RECORDS CL-2038 MONO ISSUE.
CRISS CROSS - Cut in a series of sessions from late 1962 through early 1963, this album features Monk backed by his longtime sideman Charlie Rouse on tenor and rhythm men Frank Dunlop on drums and John Ore on bass. The material is basically standard Monk. Heard hear are such Monk standards as "Hackensack", "Rhythm-A-Ning", and a superior Monk solo on "Crepuscule With Nellie". Overall the performances are exciting and energetic, the title track "Criss-Cross" stands out. This is fairly typical Monk from his Columbia years. He has long since established his personal style, but he still has a fresh imagination and produces fantastic performances throughout. Charlie Rouse is in top form as well. He was Monk's main hornman from the late 50's through most of the 60's. His extended stay within the realms of Monk's compositions and accompaniment pays off in a singular musical understanding between the two. He was such a part of Monk's group sound that a few of these tracks would sound odd with another hornman playing them. This is very nearly a great Monk album, and is recommended to all fans, or those new to his music.

TRUST - The follow-up to Hancock's breakthrough album Headhunters, 1974's Thrust was also a commercial success, peaking at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 200 LP chart. An earthy, funky, yet often harmonically and rhythmically sophisticated tour de force, Thrust is a continuation of Hancock's progression into the rapidly-changing high-tech world for new sounds and instrumentation. Thrust showcases Hancock's concentration on the funk, with plenty of wah-wah clavinet, synthesizer textures and effects, and electric piano ruminations that still venture beyond the outer limits of post-bop. Features the track "Butterfly," which Hancock would re-record 20 years later on Dis Is Da Drum.

SECRETS -
Having long since established his funk credentials, Hancock continues the direction of Head Hunters and its U.S. successors here, welding himself to the groove on electric keyboards while Bennie Maupin again shines sardonic beams of light on a variety of reeds. In Doin' It, the most successful track, Hancock makes a more overt bid for the dance floor, for the tune is basically one long irresistible groove with a very commercial-sounding bridge. Again Hancock chooses to recompose one of his standards;Cantelope (sic) Island is almost unrecognizable, converted into a sauntering, swaggering thing. A streamlining process has set in - the drumming has been simplified, some of the old high-voltage drive has been muted - yet there are still enough enjoyable, intelligently musical things happening here to hold a Hancock admirer's attention.

Earl Rudolph "Bud" Powell (September 27, 1924 - July 31, 1966) was an American Jazz pianist. Powell has been described as one of "the two most significant pianists of the style of modern jazz that came to be known as bop", the other being his friend and contemporary Thelonious Monk. Along with Monk, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Powell was a key player in the history of bebop, and his virtuosity as a pianist led many to call him "the Charlie Parker of the piano".

The Roy Meriwether Trio - Soup & Onions / Soul Cookin' By COLUMBIA/SONY RECORDS STEREO CS-9233 ISSUE
Heavy soul from the Roy Meriwether Trio – picking up at a place where the Ramsey Lewis trio first began, and taking things to a very soulful extension! The tunes are straightforward soul jazz, played with a heck of a lot of fire in the rhythms – thanks to bassist Isaas Sloan and drummer John Arnold – and all tracks feature plenty of cooking piano work from Roy himself! Titles include "The Ripper", "Taste Of Honey", "Soup & Onions", "Little Lousy Jane", and "Screwdriver".

EDDIE CANO - LIVE FROM P.J'S - DS 50018 ISSUE - If there's anyone reading this review that digs Latin soul jazz and knows even a little about Eddie Cano, then don't pass up this LP. I bought the LP version of this gem from Dusty Grooves America out of Chicago, based on their glowing review. They weren't exaggerating. The album is a non-stop live party with Cano at full throttle with his quintet. I have a couple of his studio albums under the Reprise label, but they pale in comparison to this Dunhill release.
In an era of re-releases and re-issues of re-releases of the same old junk, Here is one that's worth the expense. But don't take my word or Dusty Grooves. Indulge yourself.

TONY WILLIAMS - THE JOY OF FLYING - WITH KEYBOARDISTS - HERBIE HANCOCK - JAN HAMMER - BRIAN AUGER COLUMBIA RECORDS JC35705 OUT OF PRINT PRESSING
Tony Williams' classic fusion album, originally released in 1979. THE ALBUM features such jazz luminaries as Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott, Stanley Clarke, Cecil Taylor, George Benson, Jan Hammer, Brian Auger, Ronnie Montrose and Michael Brecker.
This album is ... excellent! This killer shuffle on "Going Far" is just great. Jan Hammer does a great job too. The second song "Hip Skip" is an awesome funky song which has Jan Hammer, George Benson, funky bassist Paul Jackson, Michael Brecker and Ralph McDonald. "Hittin on 6" is funky too and has Herbie and Stanley playin'. Now comes the hard-rock part of the album: "Open Fire" - a real hard rockin' song. My favorite song(out of 7 killer cuts) is "Tony" by Stanley Clarke. Gotta love Herbie's playing and Tony's tight grooves.. "ERIS" is another song which has Jan Hammer doing Keyboards and all synths and Tony's awesome drumming - but now it's not funky like on "Going far", now its rocking. "Coming Home" is a beatiful song.

ART FARMER WITH JOHN LEWIS PIANO - BAROQUE SKETCHES COLUMBIA/SONY RECORDS CS-9388 - Art Farmer enjoyed playing pieces with strong melodies, and the original concept of Baroque Sketches was to adapt the music of Johann Sebastian Bach into a jazz setting. After initial research, it was decided to also include works by Chopin and Albeniz, as well as John Lewis' "Little David's Fugue" and Sonny Rollins' "Alfie Theme." With arrangements by his former Jazztet partner Benny Golson, Farmer creates music that is entertaining, though unlikely to stand up to repeated listening.

ART FRAMER WITH COLEMAN WALTON PIANO - THE TIME AND THE PLACE - COLUMBIA/SONY RECORDS PRESSING CL-9449
Art Farmer has long been one of the most admired and respected trumpet stylists in jazz. THE TIME AND THE PLACE, a rock’n’roll-ish medium-tempo tune cast in a minor mode by Jimmy Heath, has a purposeful, direct feel conveyed by each of the three soloists - trumpet, tenor and piano. Tracks include: The time and The Place, The Shadow Of Your Smile, One for Juan - Nino’s Scene, Short Cake, Make Someone happy and On the Trail. If you like your jazz mainstream-modern -- not avant-garde, screaming or far-out -- the Art Farmer Quintet is worth the listen.
MILES DAVIS & pianist Red Garland - ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT - ONLY Digitally remastered directly from the original analog tapes ISSUE.. COLUMBIA/SONY RECORDS CJ 40610 LONG OUT OF PRINT LIMITED COLLECTORS EDITION LP. BARCODED JACKET BUT THE BARCODE HAS 11 DIGITS NOT 12 THAT IS NEEDED THESE DAYS TO DO A SEARCH OF THE TITLE.
Miles Davis's long relationship with Columbia began with the 1955-56 recordings heard here, as the trumpeter's suddenly rising career curve was consolidated after the move from the independent Prestige label. The band on this LP is the first of Davis's classic quintets, the extraordinary group with John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones that still stands as the definitive ensemble in modern mainstream jazz. The music ranges from the smoldering emotions of Davis's distinctively muted ballad performances to the searching quality already apparent in Coltrane's keening horn, while the band's unique chemistry is apparent on "Dear Old Stockholm" and the novel counterpoint of Charlie Parker's "Ah-Leu-Cha."

CHARLES LLOYD DISCOVERY teamed up with pianist Don Friedman, - OUT OF PRINT & TREMENDOUSLY RARE IN THE COLUMBIA/SONY RECORDS CS-9067 PRESSING.
Charles Lloyd's recorded debut as a leader was made while he was a member of the Cannonball Adderley Sextet. Doubling on tenor and flute, Lloyd teamed up with pianist Don Friedman, either Eddie Khan or Richard Davis on bass, and Roy Haynes or J.C. Moses on drums. This out-of-print LP has among its highlights "Little Piece" (dedicated to Booker Little), "Days of Wine and Roses," "Sweet Georgia Bright," and the initial full-length version of "Forest Flower." Lloyd's Coltrane-inspired sound was already in place, and his flute playing was becoming distinctive. The music is essentially melodic but advanced hard bop, a strong start to an important career.
