ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and now quite rare LP from La Voix de Son Maitre (FALP 252, heavy French microgroove pressing, red/silver label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features Jascha Heifetz's dazzling and resplendent account of Edouard Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole Op. 21 – recorded in June 1951 at Stage 9, Republic Studios, Hollywood, California, with William Steinberg and the RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra providing brilliant accompaniment.
Heifetz plays with a nonchalant brilliance and flair that is just breathtaking, with no loss of elan or authentic Spanish flavor – a work that suited him like the proverbial glove. The crack RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra provides a sultry, swaggering backdrop under Steinberg's direction.
Moreover, the disc is generously filled out with equally captivating accounts of Camille Saint-Saëns' Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso Oop. 28 (rec. 19 June 1951) and Havanaise Op. 83 (rec. 18 June 1951), as well as Pablo de Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen Op. 20 No. 1 from airs bohémiens (rec. 16 June 1951). Venue, conductor, and orchestra are the same as in the Lalo, a truly winning combination with Steinberg matching his legendary soloist bar-for-bar in inspiration. Heifetz made few finer recordings than this, and they are here offered in arguably their most handsome and desireable pressing.
As is often the case, this French pressing boasts beautiful artwork (by Jacques Combet), superb liner notes (by Claude Rostand – in French only), adding to the allure of what remains among Heifetz's finest recordings, in sound of great amplitude and presence.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is bumping at corners, edgewear, and some mild discoloration, but that is all. There are no bends, seamsplits, owners' markings, or other defects and the jacket remains solid, bright, glossy, and extremely attractive in appearance – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not CD silent, in general the playback is superb. Only those requiring completely silent surfaces need hesitate – overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
