INDEX-1967 super rare garage Psych fuzz lp.MI

For auction here are BOTH lps (original pressings) by the Grosse Pointe (Detroit) garage-psychedelic band “INDEX” (1967 & 1968). A first listen to this lp will leave you kind of stunned & mystified. The first few songs are sort of folk-rock psych. After that things get much better with fuzzed and over-reverbed & wah wah guitars floating in & out of the mix at odd intervals & volume levels. Most of the lp has a very trippy effect, like an early Velvet Underground lp but a bit stranger than that. These guys are not superb musicians but the album flows naturally and is really interesting stuff.........heavy drums and guitar sounds ranging from reverb drenched guitar and fuzz and wah wah to just plain white noise in the last song which is a massive fuzz feedback freakout. A great record!! The sound is very sparse & underproduced, sometimes dark,creepy and psychedelic..........the creepy photos on the back cover do much to that end too.......... It’s hard to imagine what they had in mind........would have made a great 60’s biker movie score for sure.

The second lp is a bit more folk rock oriented and does not have the same big blasting sound as the 1st lp......however there are a 3 or 4 songs especially on side 2 which come close and make the lp definitely worth having. As far as I can find out the second lp was sold by the band in a plain white sleeve and did not have a printed cover. This copy of the 2nd lp is in a plain white sleeve w/center hole.

Neither lp turns up much and there are rumours & claims that only 100 were pressed of the first lp. Another story from someone who worked with the band claims that after the kids moved out, mom tossed the remaining copies of the lp in the trash. Whatever you want to believe, as a dealer, I never see these records and I know lots of deep michigan collectors do not own them either. Very scarce stuff.

CONDITION: The 1ST LP----disc is easily in VG++ condition with a couple scuffs and hairline marks on one side.....some dealers might call this M- but to be safe VG++.......tons of gloss. I listened to the lp (carefully) twice and was not distracted by an occasional click here or there.....overall the sound was excellent. The cover is M- with just the hint of a wear ring. No seam splits....no bent corners......spine is firm. Nice cover!

The 2ND LP is VG- mainly because of several light lateral scuffs on both sides that make suprisingly little noise withe the occasional flare up of a few small crackles. Plays very well and what noise there is is not extremely distracting. Both lps have been carefully cleaned and will arrive turntable-ready for you.
