Description
This is an incredibly rare Northern Soul single (check Rockin' Records 2006 price guide) and so I am going to take great care to describe it to you. I am going to start this with a low opening bid and no reserve. I have very little doubt this record is going to sell well so I don't feel the need for a reserve.
I purchased this at a recent auction and found it in a large box of 45's. Robert Tanner recorded this song in the 60's on Megatone Records here in Lynchburg, Virginia. I was not in Lynchburg during the 60's so I don't know any of the companies history. We came to Lynchburg in the late 70's and they were not in business then.
You can see from the picture that someone wrote "Squirrel" at the top of the label and "Jane" at the bottom. On the flipside they wrote "Jane" on left and right side of the label.
We have sold high dollar 45's before including Bernard Smith on Groove and Elvis Presley's Compact 33 single "Surrender". This one obviously surpasses both of those value wise. For that reason I'm going to give you a play by play on the record.
1.) It plays through on both sides without skipping. The A side "Sweet Memories" is stronger audio wise than the B side "Be My Woman".
2.) Visually the vinyl is not a s strong as it sounds. The record was not in a sleeve when I got it and has the kind of wear you'd expect because of it (scuffing, etc.)
The first 10 seconds is the intro and there is some popping and crackle which continues for the first 30 seconds of the song. After that the quality improves until the end of the record.
I sold a second copy recently of the Elvis compact 33 single "Surrender" and I described that as sounding like there was a crackling fire in the background. The B side could be described that way although not as heavy as on the Elvis single.
The A side is stronger that the B side with some level of noise as but as I said it improves after the first 30 seconds and is quite listenable. Please ask any questions you want answered before bidding. This is not a perfect record, but the chances of you seeing another one soon are very slim. The record is actually quite good and is his vocals are surprisingly good.
In the dead wax it says "1405-45-M7-113-A-RG which is etched in the dead wax.
