Description

redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This superb album – the LP is still-sealed – Issued at the very end of the vinyl era – from Philips (422 334-1, Dutch pressing, silver/red label, DDD stereo) features conductor Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra’s leonine accounts of Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major Op. 73 and the Academic Festival Overture Op. 80.

Both works were recorded in the fine acoustics of Fairmount Park, Philadelphia in October 1988 (producer: Erik Smith / engineer: Hans Lauterslager).

Muti’s was arguably the finest Brahms cycle of the early digital era, Riccardo Muti's blazing and deeply burnished traversal with the Philadelphia Orchestra. For this listener, his set eclipsed such rivals as Sawallisch, Abbado, Chailly, Haitink et al.

The slow movements and finales are particularly memorable under Muti's baton, with the Philadelphia strings producing a beautiful sheen, the brass thrilling in their impact and sonnority – as intense as Toscanini, but with an added breadth and in demonstration quality sound – simply outstanding.

However, at least in the English press – and particuarly in The Gramophone – Muti's recordings have seldom received wholly favorable reviews – they have been too often qualified in one way or another – and probably as a result have not sold very well.

Certainly, this particular set suffered a very short shelf-life and does not seem to have been widelly distributed – a pity, as it is truly extraordinary.

The striking cover photo of Muti was taken by Christian Steiner, New York. There are fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket in English and French (by Bernard Jacobson), as well as in German (by Karl Schumann) and Italian (by Michele Girardi).

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is minor wear at corners, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an outstanding collector's copy.

The condition of the LP is MINT. This is a still-sealed, unplayed copy – the ideal collector's copy.
