Album set: Columbia Modern Music Series #3 (3 discs in original album)

ARTIST:  Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra, Roy Bargy/Piano

SONGS: George Gershwin’s Concerto in F

CONDITION: DISCS: E to E-, glossy, play as new. There are some light handling scuffs NAP and a few small light scratches.There are spindle marks on the labels but no scratches or tears (see photo). There is a tiny (1/8") rim flake NAP on the edge of the third disc containing parts five and six. This is literally on the edge of the rim and can barely be seen on the playing surface. ALBUM: Album and binding are intact. Slight soiling front and back (see photos). Lettering on spine is faded but legible. Sleeves are intact and clean.

This is the only copy of the “Concerto” I’ve seen in its original album. Discs are not mint but are in beautiful playing condition. If there was a booklet originally included (anybody seen one?) it has not survived. I hate to part with this one and my starting price is less than what I paid for this set some ten years ago. I hope this finds a good home.

PAYMENT: Paypal is the only payment that I accept. Payment is requested within 3 days of auction closing; if payment is not received within 5 days I will relist the item and cancel your bid. I will ship within 3 days of receiving payment; if you require same-day shipping, please do not bid.

RETURN POLICY: If you are not satisfied with your purchase, PLEASE contact me before leaving feedback and I will try to address your problem fairly. I do not offer partial refunds. I will refund the auction price plus your original shipping cost on items improperly graded and returned in the original packaging within 14 days of delivery. You must pay for return shipping. The same terms apply for items damaged by the postal service in transit. I do ask that you shoot me an e-mail with a photo of the damaged record for my own insurance purposes.

SHIPPING AND HANDLING: Your record will be sandwiched between pieces of heavy cardboard and shipped in a deep carton with plenty of packing material. I will invoice you for Media Rate shipping by default but I highly recommend that you choose the Priority Mail option. Media Mail packages are subject to opening for inspection – so much for my careful packaging. In addition, these parcels seem to receive rough handling, and I myself have received broken 78s due to damage by USPS. Priority packages seem to have a much better success rate and I hope you will protect your investment by choosing this option. Insurance is up to you and must be calculated by you. Currently I have a large supply of sturdy recycled cartons to get your records to you safely, so my handling charge is a minimal $1.25 per order for other shipping supplies and delivery confirmation (this is included in my shipping fee). This handling charge is subject to change in the future.

MEDIA MAIL rate for one 10 or 12 inch 78 is $5 with delivery confirmation. I will advise you as to costs of multiple purchases. Do not send payment until you receive my invoice for multiple purchases.

PRIORITY MAIL rate will depend upon your location (see shipping calculator). Please use the calculator only to get an idea of your final shipping costs and wait for my invoice before sending payment. I will invoice within 24 hours of auction closing.

FEEDBACK POLICY: I will leave positive feedback for you within 24 hours of receiving your payment. In return I ask that you please contact me if there is any aspect of the transaction for which you would leave less than a four-star rating, and please leave positive feedback for me as soon as possible after receiving your purchase.

GRADING SCALE: I grade conservatively under strong light; all grading is visual. I will try to note any discrepancies between visual grade and audio quality when possible. However, different styli will produce very different results so visual grading has become the standard for nearly all 78 dealers. I have not received a single grading complaint from any of my buyers.

NM: Looks and plays as new. I generally reserve this grade for records that I know or believe to be unplayed store stock.

E+: Looks and plays as new; full gloss, clean labels

E: Very slight, mostly cosmetic imperfections such as light paper scuffs may be present; record maintains high gloss and plays with little if any extraneous surface noise

E-: May have very light surface scratches, paper scuffs, small lamination creases (lams) that do not sound unless noted, very light visible needle wear; surface noise is negligible to most listeners and well below music level; a collector-worthy record. Most records that I list will fall into either this category or V++.

V++: I use this intermediate grade for records that play stronger than VG+ but don’t quite rate an E-; light but not overly intrusive surface noise may be present; still very acceptable for most collectors. Buyers have told me that my V++ is equivalent to many dealers’ E- grade.

VG+: May have any combination of light scratches, light scuffs and moderate needle wear; the “typical” used but not abused 78; surface noise is noticeable but does not overpower music level; acceptable to most collectors until the E+ copy of your dreams comes along

VG: Above flaws are more pronounced and surface noise approaches music level; I will generally list VG records only if they are of high musical or historic value.

LABELS: I do not grade labels, which will generally fall within the grade of the record, but will note any major flaws.

REGARDING SURFACE NOISE: All 78s were not created equal. A VG+ Okeh from 1927 will play with less surface noise than a 1927 Brunswick or Victor in “E” condition due to the noisy quality of the grainy shellac used by the latter labels. I assume that if you are bidding on my records, you can tell the difference between surface noise from wear and surface noise from a poor pressing. That having been said, I will try to note especially grainy or noisy pressings in my descriptions when possible, but assume all grading is visual.
