- Our Original Master Recording* Was Made From a 30 ips Half-inch Tape, Quadraphonically & Was Recorded in the High Sierras Near Squaw Valley. The Hail Storm Was Not Planned, But if You Listen Closely, You Can Detect Vertical Images, Hail Striking Different Levels of A Building; Roof, Decking, Railing, & the Ground Below Provides the Innermost Detail. The Wind Chimes Are Made of Authenic Silver Spoons & Things. Now, Light the Fire & Pour the Wine!
- The Photograph Shows Me With My 30 ips Half Inch Tape Deck, on Location in the Wilds of the San Francisco Bay. This Custom Recording System (Designed By Carl Countryman) Has Been in Exclusive Use By Yours Truly, Since June 1970, Steam Locomotive No. 4449, Became America's Most Famous Steam Locomotive, as She Paraded Coast To Coast During Our Bicentennial Celebration, Pulling the American Freedom Train (1975-76). But Before That, She Was One of the Famous Daylight Steamliner Passenger Locomotives Built For Southern Pacific During the Late 1930's & Early 1940's After Sitting Idle, Rusting Away in Portland Oregon, Park For Nearly Sixteen Years, No. 4449 Was Fully Restored To Mint Operating Condition, and Proceeded To Thrill the Nation as the Symbol & Motive Power of the American Freedom Train. While I Did Not Travel the Full 28,000 Miles During No. 4449's National Tour, I did Record Numerous Scenes That Were Reminiscent of My Boyhood Days, on Southern Pacific's Coast Daylight Route. Let's Turn Back the Clock, At Least Twenty Five Years, Between Los Angeles & San Francisco, But With Today's State of the Art Recording Techniques. Talk About A Time Machine...Brad Miller
Scene 2: California Highway 1 Overpass Near Oceano, Catches No. 99 A Few Minutes late, As She Nears the Scheduled Mid-Day Stop at San Luis Obispo. The Glitch That You Hear in One of the Air Horn Blasts, Is Not a Defect in the Disc, But Was Caused By a Spec of Dirt on Our Original Master Tape. A Careful Listen Will Detect Our Morning Dew, As the Sun Begins To Dry the Surrounding Brush.
Scene 3: East San Luis Obispo, the Northbound Coast Daylight Clears the Single Track Mainline, and Makes A Run Uphill Towards the Main Station Area & the Cuesta Grade.
Scene 4: Watsonville Canyon, No. 98 the Southbound Train Makes Her Presence Known Amongst The Birds Foliage & Mountainsides. The Daylight Class Steam Locomotives Were Equipped With Both Steam Whistles & Air Horns. The Air Horns Were Primarily Used For Grade Crossing Signals, As Their Sound Really Penetrated Over A Great Distance. Remember, the Coastal Area of California Was Often Shrouded in Fog, And the Air Horns Were Definitely a Safety Factor. I Personally Found the Sound Quite Pleasant & in Perfect Pitch.
Scene 5: The San Fernando Valley Was The Race Track, Fifteen Miles Straight as an Arrow. Here No. 98 Races Through Northridge, on Her Way To Burbank Junction, Glendale & Los Angeles, at Better Than 75 Per. It's 5:21 p.m. Catch the Wind as it Rustles the Brush
Scene 6: No. 99 Makes A Station Stop at Santa Barbara
