RARE “MAME” DEMONSTRATION LP WITH ONE SONG CUT BEFORE BROADWAY PREMIERE!
“Mame” was Jerry Herman’s follow up to his 1964 smash, “Hello Dolly,” but it was only Angela Lansbury’s second musical attempt after the Sondheim flop, “Anyone Can Whistle.” So backer$ for “Mame” were solicited with a “Demonstration Record” that contained 8 Herman songs including a reprise of the title tune. (SEE PHOTO.) Up for auction is this special Pre-Broadway album that contains one song, “Love Is Only Love,” that was dropped before the Broadway opening. (Herman later put that song into the film version of “Hello Dolly.”) PLEASE NOTE:
Neither Angela Lansbury nor Jerry Herman sing on this LP. Instead, professional studio session singers were used. Also PLEASE NOTE: there is only ONE SIDE of the record that has songs; the other side is blank. There is writing at the top of the record saying: “Pets! Open A New Window” and is signed by a “Jerry.” (SEE PHOTO.) We must CAUTION potential buyers: this LP is over 50 years old! It has the pops, hisses, and other imperfections of a record this age. Do NOT buy it if you are seeking perfect excellent audio quality. It should only be purchased for its historical value and that alone.
