Description
Original large-format 1952 first edition of The Astaire Story, signed by Fred Astaire.
- This hardcover book measures a generous 13" x 14¼" and was produced under the direction of Norman Granz.
- It is a truly rare Jazz collectible, with four limited-edition LPs (Mercury MG C-1001/4) featuring singer-dancer Fred Astaire in a recording studio with a group of top jazzmen led by Oscar Peterson.
- The resulting 38 tracks — mostly Jazz versions of great standards associated with Astaire — were pressed on four blue-vinyl records with special labels and are individually sleeved and in great condition.
- There's a handsome 11¾" x 25" color print by David Stone Martin, signed by the artist in pencil, with his initials.
- There are six pen-and-ink drawings and pochoir, also by David Stone Martin, tucked into a blue sleeve.
- The front pages include an introduction by Fred Astaire and photographs of the recording session.
- The full-page photo of Flip Phillips and Charlie Shavers has an inscription in the upper margin, signed by Flip Phillips.
- The book is copyrighted © 1952 by Jazz at the Philharmonic, Inc. and is identifed as "Number 5" of a limited edtion of The Astaire Story, signed by Fred Astaire. (#5 of 1384)
- Condition: The contents are clean, tight, and complete, with no rips, tears, turned corners, or writing, except for the signatures of Astaire and Phillips, noted above. The LPs appear to have scarcely been played; they are clean and sound, with no marks or scratches. The artwork, comb binding, and covers are also in great shape, with strong corners. The spine has slightly sun-toned and has one tiny ink mark. The large David Stone Martin color print has a center fold, as issued, and has toned slightly on the reverse side.
